Today, I Am Pretty
5
February 22nd, 2010Body TalkToday, I am pretty
Today, I look in the mirror and see
The strong line of my mother’s jaw
The fullness of my father’s lips
The ruddy blonde of my uncle’s hair
The proud sweep of my aunt’s forehead
And it is all these people
And it is me
But I have always had a pretty faceToday, I am struck by it
Today, I scramble to take a picture
So I can boast about it to my friends
So I can compare with older images
So I can uncover the secrets of beauty
So I can remember what my pretty looks like
I want to hold on to it
I want to keep it just like this
But, cosmically, the camera is brokenToday, I am pretty
Today, I must remember for myself
That I have always been pretty~ EDJ

This was very powerful. I think we all struggle with self-criticism, and to have a moment of self-awe like that is surely one of life’s greatest things.
